5 Tips to Avoid Hair Winter Blues

5 tips to avoid hair winter blues

For those of us that can’t avoid winter by escaping to warmer climes, hair winter blues are a harsh reality. If you have noticed, that during the cold winter months, your usual hair care regimes are not having the usual rejuvenating effect on your hair, then you are suffering from ‘hair winter blues’ caused by the cold temperature. The dramatic drop in temperature from summer to winter can cause havoc with our hair, resulting in frizziness, dryness, dehydration, split ends and static hair. Also, because outside temperatures are so cold and inside temperatures are so warm and dry ( because the central heating cranked up), your hair is consistently exposed to dramatic changes in temperature, causing the moisture to be zapped from your hair, exasperating the drying effects of winter.

5 Tips to Avoid Hair Winter Blues

  • Wash Your Hair in Lukewarm Water

Washing your hair in hot water might seem appealing during cold winters but lukewarm water is best because it protects your hair and scalp from being completely stripped of its natural oils.

  • Regular Hair Conditioning and Moisturise Your Hair Immediately After You Have Washed It

Conditioning your hair helps to counteract the negative effects of cold temperatures on your hair. A good hair conditioner will flatten hair cuticles, which in turn will help to seal moisture into the hair shaft, preventing your hair from becoming dry and brittle because of the cold. Flattening hair cuticles with a good hair conditioner helps to keep hair hydrated, healthy and supple (elastic).

Also, because damp hair seals in the moisture more than dry hair, moisturising your hair whilst it is damp will keep your hair hydrated, soft and supple.

  • Protect Your Hair from Heat Damage – Avoid Blow Dries

The dry cold winter months can make your hair brittle. Blow drying your hair can cause heat damage, so when combined with the damage caused by the harsh, cold climate, it's not a great mix. If blow dries or any other form of heat styling are an absolute must, then use a heat protecting spray every time you blow dry, straighten or curl your hair.

  • Get Regular Trims

Your hair is more prone to split ends during the winter months, so regular trims are vital, to keep hair healthy, preventing damage and breakage. • Stay Hydrated

Because the winter has a drying, dehydrating effect on your hair, it is important to keep your hair hydrated and you can do that by drinking lots of water and washing your hair frequently.
